Several times. In 1975, the destruction of the Sponge Rubber Products factory was the biggest criminal arson case in U.S. history. In 1934, eight children were tragically struck by a train and killed. In 2007, a 75-foot-tall Norway spruce from Soundview Avenue was used as the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree. In December 2009, a chain reaction accident involving more than 50 vehicles made the national news.

Most recently, Shelton High School students made national headlines in 2011. James Tate caused a media frenzy when he was banned from attending prom after posting large cardboard letters on the school building, asking his friend to be his date. The school eventually allowed Tate to attend prom due to the disruption caused by all the national attention.
